These Core 7 characters were carried on into G3.5, the unpopular transitional generation between G3 and G4, and a few of them eventually went on to become staple characters in G4's Friendship is Magic cartoon. These were known in the community as the 'Core 7'. It also saw the return of a points program similar to the one from the G1 days, where people could snip and save bits from the boxes to trade in for pony goodness, such as the special pony Love Wishes, jumbo plushies, and charm bracelets.ĭuring the tail end of G3, Hasbro attempted to market only a select few pony characters instead of the wide variety that G3 had been known for, and focused on re-releasing these characters instead of making new designs. There were rare ponies made for charities (such as Rosey Posey in the banner above), the SDCC ponies, the first Fair pony, the short-lived but summarily awesome Disney's Build-A-Pony store (which I was lucky enough to have been able to go to), and even a slightly horrifying live-action stage play. It was one of the most versatile generations, and found use in many different ways. Generation 3 is the third generation of My Little Ponies, introduced in 2003, and incidentally the generation I grew up with! For the US, G3 marked the end of a good 5 year pony drought, as G2 was only distributed in the US for one year (1997), and after that brief distribution, we received nothing until 2003. ![]()
